History of Forearm Dance
As a result of being injured by a drunk driver Val suffered chronic back pain. She was restricted in her movement during full body massage and often found herself exhausted from these sessions. As a matter of necessity and survival, Val was determined to continue her work. To reduce the pain in her body caused by her accident, she focused on correct body usage to reduce strain while working.
Then in 1983, Val attended a demonstration by a traditional Kahuna healer from Hawaii. The Kahuna worked from the earth up using the strength in his legs and forearms. Keeping his hands open, he put his entire body into the movement of his work, constantly expanding and moving with ease. From this one demonstration Val felt more confident in her forearm work and came away inspired to incorporate this indigenous healing method into her practice.
Val developed a heart problem in 1986 which caused her left arm to become completely numb for hours at a time. To continue financially supporting herself and her daughter, Val began to give full body massage with the use of only her right arm, focusing on the forearm and olecranon, often times unbeknownst to her clients. To work with only one arm, Val had to use the support and cooperation of her entire body. Each area of the body, along with a united rhythmic flow, allowed her to give an enjoyable and thorough massage without causing herself pain.
When Val’s heart condition subsided and she could once again use her left arm, she continued to incorporate the knowledge she had gained to cooperate the entire body with the forearm and olecranon.
The knowledge Val gained as a result of her car accident and heart problem, in combination with her formal training at The Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing and the teachings of the Hawaiian Kahuna, allowed her to apply this method of using her forearms in her practice.
This method alleviated the pain she was experiencing in her back, hands and wrists. Not only did she experience immediate relief from the pain in her own back, but her clients were also feeling better. For Val the movement was freeing and left her more energized after each session. In retrospect, she realized that Forearm Dance™ truly came to her as a gift from healers and practitioners before her. This gift has allowed her to continue the work she loves and is now available to help practitioners globally so that they may continue their practice with less pain for themselves and more enjoyment for their clients.
